And and really it's think about increasing access and some transformations how we serve customers and this is Webster R Mask with the city. Crews really excited that he joined the team when joined as director we're in between our master plan really didn't have a strong annual street here. Multi-year strategic plan. And so we did some work with the staff and community. Thank to Dana fight like where do we want to put a lot of our energy to keep our service is moving forward and our leadership board forced 3 multi-year initiatives that we have really just been trying to keep themes throughout each of our our project. So it's embodying equity, diversity, inclusion and our services staff programs and collections credit card holders and reconnecting with our community outside the library. fostering a community, our culture that engages and develops and inspires our staff and service to community. A lot of this has different projects. Different studies, research. A lot of work has gone figuring out what the best next steps are for Wichita because we have limited resources and time. But I'm really glad to be able to share with you some of the progress that we've made. So this last year were still compiling a lot of our statistics and performance measures. But we have just shy of 600,000 visitors come to the library. This is a great from the COVID are still behavior is changing from from pandemic and social distancing remarkably over 15,000 new library cards were issued this last year. Part of this was part of a partnership we have with USD 2, 5, 9, where parents and caregivers are able to opt in for a student card when they're restoration. This was piloted with high school and it's now being pulled down into the elementary schools. So at this point, we have a 76 active library counts face. This is just a fast numbers represent about 65% of our population. >> Jamie, can you send us a slight Absolute. Thank you. Some of these include institution card, staff, cards, et cetera. when I joined the staff here at FIFTY-TWO percent our population card holders and we increase quite a bit in the last couple of years. >> And we do an annual purge to make sure that our abuses of so parts that that the next fire did not actively used over 3 years are purged from the system over 12,000 program spread over 41,000 people were still getting some number. So that's probably going reach up over 50,000. December was busy can see that we're reading community and we like fiction and nonfiction almost equally. counts of collections that were far this year. This is banner year for We had multiple months where we circulated more content than we have ever before. I think we're really having a hard time keeping up with demand with everyone's shift in format. And I'll talk a little bit more about that. But I think speaking being on the road over 20,000 physical materials are shipped Inter branch throughout all of our 7 library which is pretty remarkable. People are able to get kind of next-day service when they've requested book from a library. So with the collections just this to stay, we launched our it This has been underway for a number FOX. You all. We're kind and generous provides funding to transfer our collections from Barco Technologies to Friday. So that speeds up on the way that we're able to process check-in, check-out, even be able to locate materials on the shelf. It was an exciting day on Tuesday. All this technology magic was happening. What's happening? scan individual items, the team that actually went to each of our physical and she handled over a million items and processing and putting all of the tax and it's been an incredible effort that's going a lot faster than we had anticipated. So here we are, think you know, in February next month will be converted our automated material handling. The Advanced Learning Library it. And so this is believed to pay off in about 3 years. The investment based on the amount of staff time that will be able to save about 6 or 7 touch points with an item from getting it getting an outcome. Each time an item is is handled. So it's going save quite a mentioning the increase in each So amazing that we have the Kansas State Library available to us to supplement the Wichita Public Library's collection. But what the challenges I mean, publishers are charging very differently for public libraries have access to content. So we'll work with 3 different models weakened by E item. And it's usually about 2 to 400 times more than a physical item. We depending on the publisher, we may be able to get a copy of that. House 100 simultaneous use so wonderful. Can check it out at once. And then it goes away. Or we might be able to buy something and rent it for maybe 18 months. And then after that time frame or the number of checkouts than that item gets returned to the publisher and we have to repurchase So we're really looking at our collections budget to make some strategic decisions. Long-term about that shift from physical investments in physical items into I'm more of the EU audio books. Do those do those guess if you check out book is >> The same time line is if you check your live yeah and then it returns. Automatic clear you have an option to renew >> I we had a lot of customer concerns and complaints about the delay that they're waiting for. Harry's memoir took a long time to people's requests. we're really trying pay attention to how we're expending the funds to make sure that able meet the demand, which there's continued huge demand for hot spots and borrowing Internet. think we're able to increase right now. We have 100 hot spots. Still have hope lists on them. Majority of them are being circulated from our branches and particularly that my Angelo branch. But we're looking we receive some additional funding this year. So we'll be reopening the supply hopefully keeping that going. It's it's a short-term stopgap and it's been serving. Okay. I think that their demand is higher than we're able to meet. But we're going to keep trying. >> Just Real quick with that I believe worst of the connectivity program that's offered to federal government states if you which is highly reduced cost or free Internet, is there opportunity for folks who are way and hot spots or are utilizing hotspots to also pass along that information so that they know. If you can't afford $60 a month Communications, a program where if you qualify kiddos for reduced lunch or anything like that, you automatically qualify for. reduce Is there a way possibly we can get some affirmation out, try to lessen the burden on those hot spots and give people sustainable Internet. >> I think we currently I think the process for the affordable connectivity program often where it falls town for people tier requirements are incredibly difficult. However, our staff and neighborhood services staff have been trained on all of the different programs than the fenders providers and what they need. So we're able to sit next to somebody and help walk them Thank We didn't see eye audit of our collection this Through grants. We're able to work with the 12 from Collection HQ. Is able we were able to upload our entire collection into their tool to determine based on this subject, headings. When you get into the data of a book, it has tons of and each of has. A descriptor I believe the topics evaluated race. So Asia Pacific Islander, black, Hispanic, Latino and Indigenous Middle Eastern, North African and multicultural. It assessed disabilities in our diversity. As well as equity and social issues, mental and emotional health, religion, sexuality and gender and substance abuse and addiction. So is looking through all of the headings of all of our materials that we own to see where at as far as representing diversity of our community. We've never done this before. So we really didn't have spark that the collection staffer surprised pleasantly about the analysis findings, which meant that most of our locations had a respectable I collections. Some results were expected, though. So, for example, 20% of the branches collection relates to African African-American and black related topics and her characters. So they're collection has the most related in our system. On the other hand, for example, less than 5% of the collection evergreen is related to spinnaker Latino topics and characters. So we're really paying attention to As for selecting and and wanting to make sure that every investment that we make with foundation and city dollars is fully reflecting the community. One thing that we've done this year to to kind of bridge end of year. The publishing world is really robust in the fall. That's the end of our purchasing. of your funds. And so license agreement with group called McNaughton which allows us to lease books. so we're able to fill the gap in November. December and January were are purchasing is a little long key to be able to make sure the high demand titles are still coming in. And so this a way that we're doing to supplement the heightened demand, for example, of Prince Harry spoke, we didn't want to own the silly enough because we know eventually people are going to read them they will have the silly and in our facilities which we don't have enough space for. So this allows us to in time on demand and investment and then be able to goodbye to those folks. When the readership diminishes. I'm really excited about this We've just finished profiling and we did in our catalog. You know, it's really hard sometimes to navigate in our physical spaces, especially at the advanced learning like her eat so big. So we've been doing some way finding changes there. But also I wanted to show you. A new feature within our catalog and I'm not saying it. That's so embarrassing. There it Once you get into the item record, you can actually map and it will show you exactly where in the facility you are, what shelf it is. So it's even down to the shelf number that is take your device and just be able to there's that Haha. Leveraging technologies that are staffed thank do that. Somebody saw me add digital equity is definitely area of emphasis for us as a service killer. What it does show you that we are where wireless like the system, the use last year was coming from wireless connectivity. Whether that's from a like reissue device or their own coming in. 35% using fixed stations. 130 hours of life. I was accessed through your public library system. 70,000 PC sessions were accessed. This is such a cool service, but the library and if you're stumped on anything, you can have one-on-one time with the library. And up to an hour. almost 3,000 people took advantage of that. It's really an important way of us meeting individuals where they're and then helping them with the pop to solve whatever problem on meeting to sort through. A lot of this is technological. But a lot of it also is job matters. And we do a lot again helping people applications as well. And March were actually hosting a equity summit. The city of Wichita will be so we'll be bringing together key stakeholders from the area to talk about. We're. Where we have literacy access gaps and what's going on in our community and how we might be able to create some synergies to work on the digital divide. That's just getting broader and broader. Since Google are questions and reference questions have changed a long time ago. We used to be a space where if you have any question you call and we be able to look out for, you know, you have to go. And so one of the things that we've been watching as what's the nature of the complexity of changes that our customer service staff or experiencing want to show this to you because we can see a really remarkable increase in the number of questions that are being asked. We do a monthly sample. this is really important for us with our state National Library reports. But able to see trend more customers are coming to the library to ask for questions. These definitely are more complicated. It's about legal matters. Medical matters. Housing matters. Social domestic violence were helping people find forms of all kinds to be able to navigate the challenges they're facing. Sometimes we're just their friends to buy wanted to show couple of highlights from this last year. We lost art book Bus. We're we're experimenting with some after hours. Programs to really appeal young professionals. So we have little to spelling bee that have. It was a large crowd of people no doubt about words. It was so the little free libraries for installed in district 3. We have to keep expanding that or danced. Learning Library was certified as a family Place library, which means that we've got stronger and supports for early learners and I mentioned to you with our play space at fan, starting light breeze, just always hopping with kids and families. My gosh. Just like palooza, we have integrated component to this summer reading program, which was really, really well received by the community. think parents really loved her. Anybody is going love to read for pizza what are my 2 that we have linked and learning as a free product line education. Amazing quality courses. GM Brett came last month and over 400 people from around the state came spent the with wonderful illustrations and stories and we host of Maker Faire in partnership with expiration place this year and almost 4,000 people came between the 2 locations to be able to to make and create and learn. Really been working hard this year with PPE emcee. advisory team, too. What is our next strategic agenda and some of the common themes have come up are that the libraries community trip, our children's programming as steam for the community. think people are enjoying the collaboration of the library prince to the table that we're safe and free space and that our leadership is really looking outside of the box for different ways engagement. we should say these came from a number of focus groups and conversations with you all you contributed to as well as a number of key stakeholder groups. The areas were identified for public service gaps is the decline and literacy and digital literacy, especially transportation, comes up as a as access problem. Mental health, homeless outreach and community engagement were areas where we currently are and a stronger service perhaps we can be. Out of the obstacles that are facing it, you know, lack of funding limited hours could be up what we are up 24, 7 online the shift in direction for the department and the it's calling us to make a shift, which is really looking not just as people come into our facility, but who are 35% of our community who are currently using elsewhere. They're not connected and how can be how can we get connected? And because the library, it's amazing. I think it was really telling communication. We do so much every time in the conversations they like, I wish the library to that. You just don't know about it. And so we need to do a stronger job of communicating the variety of ways that we serve. Opportunities that are coming from this. We're still in work. And so today hope to be able to share with you like flashy. This is what it We're not there yet. It's really a good thing to do this. All work. As renovating our space is how do we elevate the library as the 3rd for individuals to find to find their creative wanting make sure, too, that we're designing our services for individual experiences. think this is one of the cool things about the library is that we serve individual to individual. But then that. Cumulatively, we incredible community impact increasing engagement outside of our libraries and opportunity space, empowering civic and engaged community connections has been identified as a as a strong growth. Life parade needs to continue to lean into. And one of our advisory team members is kind of post what happens if we unleash the librarians with good things could come from that. Some were kind interested in exploring what that might look like. So we've got some questions that we're kicking around at this point to make sure that we're deciding the shifts that we're needing to make. And again, it's from more transactional library service to more relational and more impactful library Part of our interest is to be invited to every table. If you'll have me Inc, we want to be there. We want to be able to help you in the creation and in any which way because you're libraries. a Swiss army knife of skills and talents. 24 priorities. In 2024. 2 next month will be expanding hours and outreach from the Maya Angelou and Walters. Prancer believe we're going to be increasing service hours on the 3rd of February. We're partnering with Green those united that participants who are in their service programs because we can't. So he'll be here in person in Get to meet the author. But there are a lot of different ways that the library showing up in the from the full-size large advanced learning Library to each of our district branches, neighborhood branches. And now outposts like her. Bench and the little free libraries. I will say one other thing that's under way on Monday will be interviewing for new position at the library. We cook with previously worked with contracted security. At our Advanced Learning Library to make sure that the 50,000 square-foot building safe and secure and it's an old model that we've used since the libraries have security. It wasn't effective and what effect it for a number of reasons. One, because the model is reactive. In a lot of to they weren't our morning body our customer service standards and expectations. And then 3rd, it was really only in service to our Advanced Learning Library. And we have staff across 7 locations working with the public. And we want to make sure that we're able to fully train and support them in all of the different complex ways that we manage public building. So we'll have 3 library resource officers that were hiring for. We're thinking of like a library employee who handles building and public space management making sure that they're introducing themselves to everyone who comes to the library wherever they are at likely getting to know some of our regular customers who seem stuck figuring out how we might be able to connect them to different resources to help them get unstuck. But we're hopeful that newer model helps also to provide attentions support and training to our branches. As for his library counts at this point, however, behaviors, it's definitely getting more and more complex.
