You're Not Just Volunteering. You're Representing Albuquerque. | Environmental Planning Commission

My name is Adrien Carver and I am the environmental planning commissioner for the downtown district 2 district. We are helping to build Albuquerque. We are advancing the development process and helping people to get projects into the ground. And I know that every month that we are a part of helping Albuquerque grow its economy, grow its housing stock, and to build buildings that provide services to people living here in Albuquerque. And I know that makes a difference. >> One of the biggest challenges is to wrap your head around the scope of what you're doing and what the next step is. And the way that you get around that is to work with the wonderful staff, the people in the community who are here to help us, steward us through the process. The Environmental Planning Commission is the congressionally designated board that every municipality in the country has that helps make decisions about how the city uses its land. And what we do is we take a look at the comprehensive plan and the integrated development ordinance, two documents that help tell us and define the future of the built environment in Albuquerque. And so what we do is we take a look at those documents and make decisions or recommendations on specific development projects and long-term visions for the city in the built environment. Serving on a board and commission in Albuquerque is what you make of it and the work that you put in comes out on the other side for the people living in Albuquerque. So, if you're on the fence of joining a commission, I think what you should do is go to your neighborhood association, talk with your neighbors, and see what's going on in the community. try and understand if there are issues that you share with other folks in your community and make a decision if you're the right person to represent that community. If you're looking to join a board or commission in Albuquerque, you should attend one of the meetings to see what they're all about, how they function. And the staff that work with boards and commissions are incredible. They work as hard as they can in their busy lives getting things done for Albuquerque to work with you as a board member or a commissioner to understand the process, understand the scope of the board looks at, and they'll help you make that assessment. I really hope that when new people join the board that they take a beat to understand how everything works, but understand that you're representing the people of Albuquerque and it's your job to to represent them in the best way possible. And that means participating as soon as you get the chance.
