[Music] hey everyone it's Logan here with the Lowdown from this week's city council meeting Happy New Year to all it's our first city council meeting of the year and on behalf of all of us at the city we hope you had a wonderful holiday season this week's council meeting was a fairly brief one handling some beginning of your administrative task first we were happy to welcome council members Heidi fresy and Paul Tyson back to fouryear terms as they were sworn in for their new term at last night's council meeting we look forward to working with them in the years to come the city council also acknowledged an award that our finance team recently received from the government Finance Officers Association with an excellence in financial reporting award this award recognizes our 2023 audit and was received by the city in December of 20124 remarkably this is our 28th year in a row of receiving this award so once again really just want to give strong congratulations to our finance team led by administrative Services director Tia Malik for the wonderful work they do each year to complete our audit and ensure that the city's finances are in order the last thing I wanted to mention was the city enacting its cannabis ordinance as the state of Minnesota legalized the use of cannabis and hemp products and the cultivation of those products cities all across the state are required to adopt local ordinances that set standards in place for where those businesses can locate within the city the city placed a moratorium in place on these types of businesses in 2024 to complete the work of researching how best to ensure that these businesses can locate per state standard in the city of Rose Mountain cities must accept one license per 12,500 in population so for the city of our size we must accept a maximum of three licenses the state statute also allows cities to establish buffer zones away from certain types of uses so the city council decided to enact a 1,000 ft buffer from schools in Rosemount where businesses cannot locate within 1,000 ft of a school the state of Minnesota is still working to finish the work of the office of cannabis management so we cannot issue licenses until the work at state of Minnesota is completed they are in a bit of a flux up at the state of Minnesota and so we do not expect to be issuing licenses for this these types of businesses frankly anytime soon but by passing our ordinance we are now prepared to accept an application and respond accordingly so that's it from this week's city council meeting check out the full video online and we'll see you next time
