Wichita City Council Agenda Review March 14, 2025
No description available.
is a conference a bill and can
be put in a conference committee report and do you know if the details are
it increases the percentage I believe so I can get you the specific um details I'll
send you a follow-up email on that thank you we see no other questions Marley thank
you very much thank you have a great weekend you too um I will do this every time that
we use taxpayer dollars to go out of the city um so that we have again transparency
and what has happened uh this entire Council went to Washington DC over the past few days all
seven members attended uh the national league of cities as well as met with Congressional leaders
specifically Senator Moran and Senator Marshall um this is our federal priorities for the year
among one of the top priorities that we advocated for was tax exempt municipal bonds which help us
with a lot of the capital projects specifically police stations fire stations libraries rec
centers um it is very important for the city um but it's not just the city of Witchita it
actually is a topic that the national league of cities also was advocating for while ALS
also at the National League of cities had an opportunity to represent again witchta being the
largest city in Kansas uh the large cities meeting um and during that meeting uh we had multiple uh
conversations about um the grants that come down from the federal government down to municipalities
and so I asked city manager Leighton to send me uh but I'd like him to send it out to all
the council members all the grants that the receives from the federal government and how
those would affect the different departments as you know a large portion of public transit
is funded by federal dollars um and so that was something that um was part of that spreadsheet
that was eye openening in terms of knowing where all the federal dollars are coming from by
category or by department so I think um all council members would appreciate seeing that too
in addition uh while I was there I also serve as co-chair of the National League of cities
Advanced Air mobility and drone integration Forum uh specifically about Aviation as we all
know this is the air capital of the world uh we need to continue to advocate for our city uh the
jobs that we currently have but also the future jobs that we could have uh regarding drones
and air Mobility so we had a good conference um had the also opportunity to meet with mayor
of DC um and we had the opportunity to talk to her about uh the connection that we now have
since the tragedy uh of American Airlines 5342 uh we gifted her a small Keeper of the Plains to
remind her of again um our gratitude to her but more specifically Her First Responders in the wake
of the tragedy um and so again I'm again grateful that um we as a council went to DC to advocate
for this city and I'll be doing again this um every time that there are taxpayer dollars funding
our travel would any council members like to add anything if not um I will thank you appreciate it
that um in addition to the number of courses that they had for the national league of cities I know
I had a lot of conversations with other electeds around affordable housing housing affordability
um what their communities are doing and trying to get some ideas around that and also quality
of life in those areas um that's something that we tend to keep front of mind when we have
our conversations so asked a few of my elected colleagues around the country to send some policy
ideas um to see what we can do here in Witchita and to your first point um I think everybody
is trying to look at all the details of what federal funding is coming into their communities
and we've talked about there was a few colleagues that looked at you know what would be the
long-term impact if their city had to take on those individuals or if they had a national
park in their city and you know how that would work so that's I think that's top of mind again
as well for a lot of communities here in this country I will just add that um vice president
JD Vance was one of the keynote speakers and his topic was about housing and that it
is a bipar is an issue um I believe every Community is facing the need for more housing
of all sizes of all types and of all uh income brackets so um again witchat is not immune to
the conversation regarding housing and I'm glad that um it is being heard at the federal level
at the state level and here at the local level uh last but no go ahead you go ahead any any
further comments from NLC or DC um tomorrow morning is the district 2 Breakfast um and we
will have Gary Jansen talk about drought water reuse Red Bud Trail all things public work so 9:00
tomorrow morning at the Regent and then Teresa my wonderful community service representative
and I will hustle down to the parade at noon that's it so uh tomorrow it will be the St
Patrick's Day Parade in deleno council member Glascock and council member Ballard both are
inviting us to the deleno area as they share that neighborhood uh the parade starts at noon
there will be lots of festivities and last but not least on 316 day March 16th Sunday I will
host my first state of the city address at 5: CL at the former Central Library it is free and
open to the public and doors open at 4:30 for the state of the city address um again I want to
invite the community but if you cannot attend in person it will be broadcast live on the city's
social media Pages as well as the city's YouTube page and happy Pi Day 31 four thank
you very much have a wonderful weekend
