Oh Lord our God and our father, we come to you and we ask that you look upon this particular gathering tonight to keep us safe and guide us in our decisions. Bless our city with honorable citizens, industries, sound education, good government. Unite our community together even though we come from different backgrounds. We pray that there be justice of peace in our city. Give the city council and citizens the wisdom, direction, and sensitivity to the business and proceedings before us tonight. Hear us therefore as we commit this meeting to the help of the community. Amen. Please join me in the pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Uh land acknowledgement. City of Aurora acknowledges that we gather on the territories and ancestral homelands of the Cheyenne, Udarapo, and Lakota peoples, past and present. We also recognize the 48 contemporary tribal nations that are historically tied to the lands that make up the state of Colorado. Indigenous peoples have remained committed to the stewardship of this land over many centuries. As these words of acknowledgement are spoken and and heard, the ties that these nations have to their traditional homelands and to their vital place in the ecosystem are renewed and reaffirmed. And we are called upon to be better stewards of the land we inhabit as we continue to work to meet the needs of our entire community. [Music] Um executive uh session update. Uh during um executive session, uh uh we um um uh were briefed on uh quasi judicial hearings, information only, and um um on a property acquisition. Is that an acquisition or combination? This is a discussion regarding the urban cottages, the public hearing that we've had a couple settings on the agenda for, uh, the planning zoning commission has notified that they are not going to have a chance to review the plat um, without getting more information from the applicant. So, um, what we're planning on asking council to do is to continue that today to either June 23rd or July 14th to give time for that. And what we'll do on the agenda on the 5th because that's when it's set for. Again, this is a quasi judicial hearing. It's been set out uh with hearing notices if we can do that during this uh meeting and get that approved. We'll make a notation on the agenda on the 5th. So, everybody who would come down for that May 5th hearing would know that it was continued already tonight to a date certain. that way new notices wouldn't have to go out. Uh I want to thank um uh Council Member Hancock uh uh Stephanie Hancock for presenting uh her initiatives uh uh both local and and at the state level concerning uh vehicle registration uh enforcement and also want to thank um Kathleen Chandler uh RTD director I believe it's she has district F u in Aurora uh for her presentation on um on mass transit and I gave a presentation uh on um uh the our new uh Aurora homeless uh uh navigation resource center that will be operational in November and the strategy behind that. And so, um, let's see. Uh, Council Member Gardner. Um, Council Member Jerinsky for reports. No report. Um, Council Member Kums. Thank you, Mayor. Um, first I'd like to thank our staff and community members who came this weekend for Engage Aurora Live, which gave folks the opportunity to comment on a variety of uh plans and proposals coming forward in the city um including the connecting Aurora plan. There is an opportunity to participate in that uh process for engage or sorry for connecting Aurora tomorrow, April 22nd at the central library um from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be a discussion on connecting Aurora, which is our multimodal transportation master plan. Um, and you can also go online um to take a survey and comment on the plan as it's been proposed thus far. Um, if you go to engage aurora.org. Um, so we hope that folks will contribute to that conversation about what it looks like to get around in our city through a variety of modes and what we would like it to look like in the future. So, thank you and have a great night. Council member Cass. So, uh, last week I was able to attend the Aurora scholar, uh, Aurora, uh, scholars award ceremony. It was organized by Aurora public uh, library. It was great along with Mayor Mike Koffman. And then also I was able to attend uh the University of Denver the pan-Africanism and uh uh economic opportunity and met a lot of uh Aurora College students. It was great and we do have we have a I participate on war two uh town hall meeting alongside with councilman Steve and Jeruski. So it was great. Thank you. Uh, Council Member Mario. Thanks, Mayor. Uh, just a reminder, my monthly town hall is going to be this Thursday, April 24th, at uh, Morehead Recreation Center, 6:00 to 7:30. I hope to see you there. Um, I have, um, an update from the Aurora Sister Cities Board um, that I sit on um, and we partner with the city. Um we are um so as part of our process in developing official sister cities where there's like a you know a formal agreement signed between mayors of different cities um uh to enter into some sort of uh friendship city. Um we have what's called um uh uh sorry a friendship city. Um and so we um approved another um friendship city um in Nepal. Um and we're really excited. We have a lot of energy from um a very active member um and so they have you know roughly a year to start building up um community support um and um we will actually be having a delegation from the Nepali embassy come visit us um during Global Fest this year. So, um we've been very active in trying to build other um uh sister city friendship city relationships um with other communities across the uh the world. Um and uh thank you to uh council member Cass for meeting with our board chair um on um how we can potentially rebuild the Adama or Ethiopian um sister city uh relationship um as well. So, lots of really exciting things that are happening. Um, wanted to keep you all um updated there. Um, and uh lastly on a um more uh you know, frank note, um just I wanted to just take a moment to um just acknowledge and recognize that um uh as of yesterday, it's been 26 years since the Coline shooting. um you know, somebody who grew up here in Colorado um uh and somebody who grew up here in Aurora specifically and somebody who um has been part of an active um shooting um active active shooter situation. Um you know, that's an issue that I think we all hold really deeply um in our hearts and even though it's been 26 years, I don't think it gets any easier. Um, and um, you know, uh, my heart goes out to all the families that still suffer, that are still suffering, that still experience the trauma, um, of potentially having their kids now in high school um, and having to worry about the fear um, just as they did um, 26 years ago. So, um, just wanted to offer my condolences, sending my, um, thoughts and prayers to the families and community members that were directly impacted and really to all of us here who've had to continue to endure these mass shootings, um, in Colorado and, uh, across the country. Um, thank you, uh, Mayor Pam Sunberg. Thank you, sir. No report. Uh, Council Member Medina. Thank you, mayor. Uh the mayor and I attended the uh ribbon cutting over at the across the way at the the sprouts. Uh and we were able to get a lot of people through. There was about a hundred well a little more than that. I think about 250 is what I kind of guesstimated that waited out in the cold uh to kind of go in and check it out. So wishing it much success and it's a good uh addition to our community. So thank you. Council member Hancock. No report. Mayor. Uh, Council Member Lawson, Council Member Bergen. No report. Mayor, uh, let me just, uh, mention a couple other things, and that is, uh, I just want to thank, um, uh, our, uh, library and cultural services, uh, director, Ginger White, and her staff. They did an incredible job in working with all of our schools, public and private, through the city of Aurora to do the annual Aurora Scholars Award uh where uh the the individual schools and the in the districts as well uh have a you know a program where they pick outstanding students and uh we recognize them and so but we recognized them individually. there were 560 students and it took um over three evenings, two sessions uh an evening uh at I think 5:15 and 7:00 starting at 5:15 and 7:00 to be able to recognize all individually recognize all 560 students. But um I think that the families are just incredibly proud and I'm proud uh of those students and and I and I just uh want to mention it with uh Council Member Medina. We were there at 6:30 in the morning on Friday and uh at Sprouts and uh just uh very exciting to have them uh here in the city of actually with their second store uh in in this city. Um, seeing no further business before the Aurora City Council meeting is adjourned. [Music]
