No description available.
welcome again to the Mesa city council meeting for September the 9th of 2024 uh our council is present a couple of them uh are here virtually uh council member Duff are you with us yes I am thank you thank you and vice mayor Heredia you're here as well vice mayor can uh did you acknowledge that you're here with us he's on the screen but we might hopefully we we'll hear from him in a minute when he's voting on some things uh we will begin our meeting with an invocation offered by Pastor Jared Moore Pastor are you with us we will begin our meeting with a moment of silence uh followed by the Pledge of Allegiance so we invite you to stand for the moment of silence and remain standing for the pledge thank you please join me in the Pledge of Allegiance I pledge aliance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all um first item on our agenda today is under Awards and recognitions and we have one Proclamation uh this mon this evening it recog recognizes September as ovarian cancer awareness month this month acknowledges that ovarian cancer affects thousands of women and families across the country each year and that in Mesa we are committed to promoting health and wellness for all of our residents before we present the proclamation I'd like to invite Cassandra uh coun from the Mesa health and weal Center to tell us more and to introduce Rachel putam to share a few words Cassandra um thank you so much for having me I wanted to take a little a minute here to share first why um the proclamation is so important to the health and wellness department so preventative care is one of the most powerful tools that we can use to help Foster a healthier more productive Workforce and um this year we have really committed to putting more emphasis on preventative care um by encouraging employees and their family members to get regular checkups and to get regular screenings um it really helps to capture these things and health issues before it gets too serious and also expensive um so we've increased our incentives thanks to support city manager um and so employees and their family members um spouses can get a $50 gift card for every preventative screening that they get completed um and so I'm pleased to share that so far this year alone we've had over 5,000 preventive screenings completed and that's a 10% increase since last year so we're really excited about that um as along with our incentive increases we have also really started doing um awareness campaigns and it's been great utilizing our inside Mesa app that we have because we're able to reach so many more employees and um so we've it's a great opportunity also to share all the wonderful resources we have for our employees so one of those is including our outstanding Wellness Center and so our Pro our um campaign we're doing right now is ovarian cancer and we had one of our amazing um nurse practitioners from the wellness center kayn Ballinger and she created a 5minute video talking about um informing the employees and their families about risks risk factors signs and symptoms um treatment options and really just to get awareness out there and educate the employees on ovarian cancer um so I just wanted to thank you all for your support um in this Proclamation and also support in just really putting it really helps employees feel valued and appreci appreci it and it also puts um wellbeing at making us aware that it's a top priority and it's very important so that being said I'd like to introduce Rachel Putman um and she is a Survivor a thriv and an advocate um for ovarian cancer so Rachel welcome Rachel hi thank you and thank you for wearing teal so teal is the color of a cancer if you guys didn't know that we like to say not all cancer is pink um and I can say that because I'm also a breast cancer survivor so um thank you for granting this Proclamation it means so much to myself and my teal Community that's out there not just in the state of Arizona but really across the country um when I was diagnosed in 2020 I thought I was you know doing my Women's Wellness exams living blissfully ignorant of this ovarian cancer that was building in my body um I learned that peps smars do not detect ovarian cancer there is not any not one reliable test that detects ovarian cancer um when I was diagnosed it took four months and two surgeries to get diagnosed with my ovarian cancer it took about a week to get diagnosed with my breast cancer it was a simple biopsy um in and out and so I've really just dedicated um my septembers to going to as many City Council meetings as possible possible collecting proclamations and creating awareness um I was actually diagnosed with low grade cus ovarian cancer and that is a very rare form that disproportionately impacts younger women it's Insidious it's recurrent has a 85% recurrence rate so at four years out I am beating the odds and there is not one FDA approved treatment for my cancer so young women across the country are being diagnosed with no options available to them so it's just really important to create this awareness signs and symptoms can be vague they mirror a lot of those of GI symptoms like bloating feeling full different things like that so it's really important that you have these conversations with your doctor doing that preventative care is critical um I actually found out about my cancer because of my husband and I were trying to get pregnant and it was through going to a fertility doctor and that's how a lot of young women also get diagnosed so it's just so important to understand it um genetic factors with ovarian cancer are pretty small it's only about 20% correlation to genetic factors so most people that are diagnosed um there's no lineage in their family of ovarian cancer um but there is some correlations to breast cancer colon cancer prostate cancer so choral cancers if they run in your family um are really important so just um educate yourself watch the training video I've watched it it's amazing and it's five minutes of your time but it really can um serve you just getting that out to their for your friends and family and understanding more about what this disease is about and hopefully save some people in your life thank you well uh Rachel thank you so much for coming and helping to raise awareness on this we certainly you're in our in our prayers and we appreciate the great example that you're setting and and Cassandra thank you so much for all you're doing to support our our Workforce here at the city of Mesa we do have a proclamation Council let's go down and take a photo with these two great ladies if
