Mayors Moment: May 2026

No description available.

Hello everyone and welcome to another mayor's moment. I want to take a moment to provide an update following our recent meeting with Excel Energy regarding the power outages many residents have experienced. As many of you know, I requested a special city council meeting so our council staff and residents could hear directly from Excel about what's happening and what's causing the outages and what improvements are planned moving forward. The meeting on May 6th included representatives from Excel's community relations, engineering, and design teams, and it was open to the public. One of the first questions I asked, because I've heard it from many of you, was whether these outages are being caused by new housing developments or a lack of power capacity in Cottage Grove. Excel's answer was very clear. No. They confirmed that Cottage Grove is not short on power and that new housing developments are not causing these recent outages. According to Excel, the most common causes of outages are things like tree branches contacting power lines, animals such as squirrels interfering with equipment, and aging infrastructure or equipment failures that require repair or replacement. Looking ahead, Excel shared plans to invest approximately 20 million into Cottage Grove's electrical infrastructure over the next couple of years. Those investments are intended to improve reliability, strengthen the local electric network, and significantly reduce outage durations, potentially taking outages from lasting hours down to just minutes. While that investment is encouraging, we all understand that any outage, whether it's 20 minutes or 2 hours, is frustrating for residents and businesses. That's why we've also asked Excel to improve communications with the community regarding outages and upcoming projects. I'm pleased to say they've been receptive to that feedback and willing to continue engaging with the city and residents. I also want to briefly acknowledge the ongoing 80th Street construction project. We know the traffic impacts, delays, and detours have been frustrating and inconvenient for many residents, businesses, and commuters. Major infrastructure projects are never easy, and I truly appreciate everyone's patience as this important work continues. As part of that project, the North Highway 61 ramps at 80th Street are expected to remain closed for approximately 8 to 10 weeks. We encourage residents to plan ahead, allow additional travel time, and follow posted detour routings during construction. These improvements are designed to create safer and more efficient transportation infrastructure. And we appreciate the community's continued understanding throughout the process. Please head to adrecg.com to view project updates and information, and most importantly, sign up to receive weekly updates. This is the best way to stay informed as the project continues through the fall. Finally, with summer rapidly approaching, there are so many events coming up and I hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy all that Cottage Grove has to offer in the coming months. Thank you, and we will see you in the next Mayor's Moment.
