one struggle, one fight, all workers unite. Right? If you come one community, one vulnerable community, we're going to up together and show you that you're messing all of us while struggle one fight, one struggle, one fight. We're standing today with all workers because we know that right now are under attack. Families are attack. The Department of Education is under. And we're not going to stand by that. And we want to make sure that we stand in solidarity and push back on these unfair policies that are targeting the working class folks. We have about 40 to 45% unemployment currently. Now, how many people are not working right now? That's how many people are working right now. I work for the Animation Guild where IATSE 839 and our members are losing jobs, they're losing their health insurance, they're going on unemployment. They're the social safety net programs. The state. And if we can get back to work, we don't have to tap into that system. Know this day is especially important for me because I think about my parents migrated here who came undocumented, about my aunt who passed away here undocumented who gave so much of her life to make this country. And just everyone I've worked with over the years. Today we're here to uplift them, fight for them, make sure to tell everybody that LA is for everyone everyone. And I hope that this is an example what we need to be doing in this moment and this time is that we're not going to take it sitting down, going to stand up, we're going to protest, we're going to exercise our First Amendment rights and we're going to make our voices heard. And to the point that they cannot ignore us no longer longer. The idea of Denim Day came from an Italian case of injustice and has grown into an annual event. Council members joined in wearing denim to show LA support victims of sexual assault. We welcome to denim day in LA Denim Day began in 1999 as a bold response to a devastating injustice because so often is what we see and experience as women. Any victims is the of our voices. It was a rape in Rome, Italy, where the judge a rape conviction saying it couldn't be rape because the woman wearing tight jeans therefore it was consent and he won the appeal and the women parliamentarians Rome wore jeans as protest on the steps of the Supreme Court. It's so important the campaigns that we have, but this one is particularly important. It's because the city council members actually and speak out against that kind of behavior and to try to change the culture of rape in our city and then in our country and across the world. Together are so much stronger and together we can ensure that change and an environment where so often victims are silenced, we together will amplify our voices. And that is we are here to commemorate each and every day. Today marks six years of denim day, 26 years of powerful, visible defiance in the face of shame and injustice. 26 years of saying more. We wear denim as a testimony, wear denim as resistance. We wear denim to reclaim our stories and stand up to the systems that blamed us, silenced us, ignored us. We wear denim to say we believe survivors. All survivors. You didn't do anything to deserve the experience that somebody forced on you. And don't hold it for years and get some therapy. Tell somebody. Go to peace over violence and about what you experienced. And talk about how we can make change and support others that have had the experience experience. The county of LA declared denim day in the county and the city's denim day in the. LAUSD has declared denim day throughout the district. So it's really important day for LA to pay attention and hopefully people will learn more more about what causes violence and how to prevent. The LA wildfires were another blow to those working in the film industry. Councilmember Adriene Nazarian welcomed industry workers to City Hall as council approved his motion to make filming in LA more affordable. We're in front of City Hall right now. We Just took a unanimous vote of, a motion that I introduced several of my colleagues to make sure we help protect filming Los Angeles . Production has really dried. We actually have members who haven't worked in almost two years, two years. Think about that. They've exhausted their unemployment. They've run out of health. They don't really have money to pay bills, food, just do the normal stuff to survive. So that's why this was really critical for us to be here and. I think the downtown ecosystem when I think about this, because we've seen shuttered businesses have empty storefronts, we have less foot traffic on our streets, why not use this moment to increase production in parts of our city that also need that economic. Yes, this was a first step to making sure that look at how we can reduce permitting costs, how we can reduce parking to personnel usage and other fees in order to make that we're lowering costs all fronts and that filmmakers are motivated to continue filming and making in Los Angeles. Those of us that come here from other states, other cities, we come here because this is the this is the place where all of the magic happens. And the idea that in the last four or five years, it's really hard to a job in the city. This was a first good step to make sure that we let entertainment industry know that Los Angeles is cares and wants to take the right steps to sure that we protect and preserve and grow this industry back again in Angeles. The old zoo area in Griffith Park is giving way to something. Council member Nithya Rahman, the Department of Recreation and Parks, joined community members to break ground on what will be a new space for the performing arts. We're in Griffith Park at the site of the old zoo where we just broke on a new performing arts that's going to be located right here. It is the site of years performances of the independent Shakespeare Company . But once this performing arts center is built, we're going to host Shakespeare and so much more in the beauty of Griffith Park over the last 14 years, we've had to build a temporary platform there. We're on a slope right now. It's kind of difficult to build that. It can never really be that big or high. So we had Sightline with the audience. The sets couldn't be all that impressive. It's very hard to light from above. So this is going to have a much bigger stage, a tall overhead, the lighting, the sets, everything is going to look so much more impressive when you have performed in nature that attracts families, young people, into enjoy it. Griffith Park in particular is such a beautiful gem here in the city Los Angeles and to have the ability to showcase art here as is done major parks across the world. This is something that Los Angeles has overdue for. One of the things that I think I would love to highlight just about this space is that it seems many different functions. It was the old zoo before the L.A. Zoo opened up, it became sort of a picnic area. It's a space where you congregate, really getting those family moments together. These are places where people celebrate you know, that's what we say about our parks. There are places where people recreate, but they're also spaces where people celebrate. People have been waiting for the groundbreaking this theater for a very long time. Actually my predecessor in this role, Tom LaBonge, first thought about doing this years ago. For me, it's been an honor to be able to move this project along and, carry his dreams forward of, making a permanent home for right here in Griffith Park. May Wildfire Awareness Month. L.A.
