[0:10] **Oakdale Police Sergeant:** Police several years ago introduced the dash camera system that we've been utilizing ever since and had good results with the public interaction traffic stops but the limitations with that product is kind of as narrow to the front of the squad and then the body mics that we currently have are connected to the squad as soon as you get too far away it makes it difficult to hear or you lose audio completely body cameras have come a long way I think the first agency in Minnesota was 2010 when they started using them after that kind of just trickled into the bigger agencies but currently the whole Metro is pretty much has body cameras that we're kind of lagging behind in that department so we just wanted to get an
[0:56] **Oakdale Police Sergeant:** opportunity to kind of get up to stuff with the neighboring agencies also create that connection with the community so that there's Integrity on both sides for the law enforcement and the citizens we interact with so there is a process that's in statute through the state um we have to elicit public response on a policy and then just public comment on whether the body cams are a good fit for our city we're going to be working on that process shortly here and hope to have that wrapped up by the Fall some other things that we've done is we started a working group within the Oakdale Police Department between officers detectives Command Staff researching options that
[1:44] **Oakdale Police Sergeant:** are out there contacting neighboring agencies that have body cameras in place talk about the problems they had when they started the ongoing problems with like data retention cost that type of thing and then we worked through that we demoed four of the units as we did several units and came down to we narrowed it down to two that are the top performers and then at the end of this we're going to present the top performer to the city council for approval working the afternoon shift as a sergeant I'd come in contact with a lot of citizens on calls and it is very common that it comes up live in we have to explain we don't have body
[2:30] **Oakdale Police Sergeant:** cameras I know the officers as a whole lot want the system in place some concerns that have come up and the reason we've kind of has not done it as quickly as other agencies is the statute wasn't in place to protect privacy up until a couple years ago anybody could request any body camera at that point but now it's been narrowed down the FBA party of the video to request it and there's a lot of Protections in place to prevent people getting access to video in people's homes and that type of stuff unless they're directly involved.
